After wondering if the day would ever come, the Charlton County Indians will open up the season this Friday night against Brantley County. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 at Champ Bailey Field.

The Bethune Middle School Braves got their season underway last Wednesday when they dropped a heartbreaking, 24-20, game to Camden Middle School.

The Maidens softball team hit a bump in the road after players tested positive for Covid-19. Therefore no games were played last week and September 8 is the day they are shooting for to resume play.

Friday will be the final day to sign up for youth football, soccer and cheerleading. For further information, contact the Recreation Department at 496-7037. 

After a slow start to the season, Courtney Williams has picked up her game as she is averaging almost 14 points and six rebounds a game for the Atlanta Dream as the team heads into the final few weeks of their abbreviated 22 game season.

Chris Milton is finishing up the final week of training camp for the Tennessee Titans before teams have to cut their rosters down to 53 players on Saturday. The Titans are scheduled to open up the season on Monday, September 14 on the road against the Denver Broncos.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have agreed to trade disgruntled defensive lineman Yannick Ngakoue to the Minnesota Vikings for a 2021 second round draft pick and a conditional 2022 fifth round pick that could go as high as a third round pick. The loss of their top defensive lineman won't help the Jaguars as they hope to improve on their 6-10 record from a year ago. Jacksonville will host the Indianapolis Colts in their first game on September 13. 

College football returned last week in a small way as one game was played. Central Arkansas knocked off Austin Peay 24-17 in the season opener. More games will be played this weekend, but the ACC and Big 12 won't begin until September 12 and the SEC begins play on September 26.

The Atlanta Braves acquired pitcher Tommy Milone from the Baltimore Orioles to help with their struggling starting rotation. The Braves have lost ace Mike Soroka to a season ending injury, while newcomer Cole Hamels has yet to pitch this year due to a shoulder injury. Despite the shortcomings of the starters, the Braves still lead the National League East just past the midway point of the 60 game schedule.

Lucas Giolito of the Chicago White Sox tossed the first no hitter of the season after blanking the Pittsburgh Pirated 4-0. Giolito walked just one batter while striking out thirteen.

The NBA playoffs took a three day hiatus to protest social injustice, but returned to the courts on Saturday. The Eastern Conference first round matchups are all complete with the Boston Celtics, Toronto Raptors, Milwaukee Bucks and Miami Heat all advancing to the second round.

   In the Western Conference the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers have both advanced waiting on the winners of the Utah Jazz/Denver Nuggets and Houston Rockets/Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round.

 Dustin Johnson made a spectacular birdie on the 18th hole to force a playoff, but Jon Rahm trumped him with a 66 foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to claim the win at the BMX Championship. The tournament also pared the field down to 30 golfers for next week's Tour Championship in Atlanta.

William Byron won his first career NASCAR Cup Series race on Saturday at Daytona earning his way into the playoffs on the final race of the regular season. Byron dodged his way through two wrecks late in the race and won in overtime beating out Chase Elliott.
