The first day of summer was officially last Friday, but for some Indian and Maiden athletes summer v a c a t i o n ends in about one m o n t h . The Indian football squad will begin conditioning practice on July 25, and the first practice in pads will be on August 1. Meanwhile, the Maiden softball team can begin practice on July 29. 

The Indian baseball squad had several summer league games last week and the Indian basketball squad was camping at Georgia Southern. 

L.J. Talley got off to a slow start with the Lansing Lugnuts, but seems to have picked up the pace in his last two games. Last Friday, he picked up two hits and drove in his first run, and then on Sunday, hit his first professional home run while driving in two more runners. 

The Connecticut Sun ran their winning streak to seven games after a win over the Atlanta Dream, but the streak came to a halt on Sunday, when the Sun fell to the Chicago Sky. The loss was just the second of the year for the Sun. Courtney Williams scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the two games. 

The NBA held their draft last week, and to no one’s surprise, Duke’s Zion Williamson was the first player to be selected, as he was chosen by the New Orleans Pelicans. 

The Atlanta Hawks had two first-round picks and selected center Jaxson Hayes from Texas, with the eighth overall pick. However, it is reported that the Hawks will trade Hayes to the Pelicans, and get forward De’Andre Hunter from Virginia, who was the fourth overall pick of the Los Angeles Lakers. Then with the tenth overall pick, the Hawks selected forward Cam Reddish from Duke. 

Michigan and Vanderbilt both went through their brackets undefeated at the College World Series and began their best-of-three championship series on Monday. 

The Atlanta Braves have opened up a 6.5- game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East. The Braves won two of three games from both the New York Mets and Washington Nationals, while the Phillies are in the midst of a seven-game losing streak. 

The Braves have seven players who have a chance to start the All Star Game this year. Under the new voting system by the fans, a primary vote was taken and the top three at each position will be voted on beginning Wednesday. The All Star game will take place in Cleveland July 9. 

The Jacksonville Sharks set a franchise record for points in a game and avenged their lone defeat on the season when they defeated the New York Streets, 83-51, Saturday night at home. Quarterback Mike Fafaul threw nine touchdown passes, which tied a National Arena League record. The Sharks are now 8-1 on the season. 

At the Traveler’s Championship, Chez Reavie won his first PGA event in almost 11 years. Reavie beat out both Zach Sucher and Keegan Bradley by four strokes. 

Hannah Green won the Women’s LPGA Championship and also claimed her first career win by edging out Sun Hyun Park by one stroke. 

At the NASCAR Cup Series race in Sonoma, California, Martin Truex, Jr. won for the second consecutive year comfortably holding off Kyle Busch for his fourth victory of the season.
