The Maiden softball team is now 13-7 after beating Turner County and dropping a one decision to Telfair County last week. The Maidens are in their last week of the regular season and are looking to maintain or boost their power rankings. Currently, the Maidens are ranked 22nd with the top 24 making the playoffs. Four games at home this week will decide their fate.
The Indian football team dropped to 1-4 on the season after another tough loss on the road to Turner County. The Tribe returns home this Friday, but the schedule doesn’t get easier as they host top-ranked Irwin County.
Prior to Friday night’s game, former Indian and NFL Hall of Famer Champ Bailey will be recognized in a pregame ceremony. Also, Friday night will be Rec. Night with all recreation football players and cheerleaders admitted free.
Courtney Williams and the Connecticut Sun opened up the WNBA Finals last Sunday. The top-seeded Washington Mystics took the opening game of the best of five series. The Sun rallied from an early deficit but couldn’t ever catch up all the way. Williams scored a game-high 26 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out five assists in the game. Game two will be played Tuesday.
Chris Milton recorded two tackles in his return to Atlanta, where he played collegiately at Georgia Tech as the Tennessee Titans knocked off the Atlanta Falcons, 24-10. The Titans improved to 2-2 on the season while the Falcons dropped to 1-3.
Top-ranked Clemson survived a scare Saturday when North Carolina’s two-point conversion failed late in the game, giving them a 21-20 win over the Tar Heels. While they pulled out the win, the newest polls dropped them to second and moved Alabama into the top spot.
Every other top-ten team that played won their games, including ninth-ranked Florida’s 38-0 victory over Towson State. Next week, the Gators will face off against seventh-ranked Auburn in a huge SEC matchup. The Georgia Bulldogs will come off their bye week to play at Tennessee.
With the division clinched, the Atlanta Braves used the last week of the regular season to give some players a rest and give some bench players some extra at bats before the playoffs begin. The Braves will open the playoffs on Thursday when they play the St. Louis Cardinals.
In other playoff action, the Milwaukee Brewers and Washington Nationals will play the wild card game on Tuesday with the winner moving on to play the Los Angeles Dodgers.
In the American League the Oakland A’s and Tampa Bay Rays play the wildcard game on Wednesday with the winner playing the Houston Astros beginning on Friday. Also on Friday the Minnesota Twins will play the New York Yankees.
“Minshew Mania” is alive and well in Jacksonville as rookie quarterback Gardner Minshew rallied the Jaguars from a 17-3 deficit to take a 23-17 lead. But after the Denver Broncos responded with a touchdown of their own, Minshew took the Jaguars down the field for a game-winning field goal to claim a 26-24 win. The Jaguars got 225 rushing yards from Leonard Fournette to help keep the Broncos offense off of the field in the second half. With the win, the Jaguars improve to 2-2 on the season.
At the NASCAR Cup Series playoff race in Charlotte, Chase Elliott punched his ticket into the second round beating out Alex Bowman for the win. The playoff field was reduced by four as Ryan Newman, Aric Almirola, Kurt Busch, and Erik Jones were all eliminated from the championship run.
