The Charlton County Maiden softball team ran their winning streak to five games after knocking off Liberty County, Telfair County and Atkinson County last week. The wins improved their record to 8-2 on the season and 6-1 in Region 2-A play.

On Monday at home, the Maidens got a rare perfect game from Emma Woolard on the mound and recorded their third straight shutout while defeating Liberty County, 12-0, in four innings. Woolard retired all 12 batters she faced including five strikeouts.

Charlton scored four two-out runs in the first inning. Gabby Tillisdrove in the first run with a single and Jalees Murphy added a two RBI single before an error scored the fourth Maiden run.

The Maidens added two more runs to their total in the third inning when Tillis scored on a passed ball and Murphy’s sacrifice fly scored Abby Safford from thirdfor a 6-0 lead.  

They would double their run total in the fourth by adding six more runs. Liberty would walk the bases loaded and Samantha Baxter singled to drive in two runs. Tiffany Rivera added an RBI groundout and Kylee Varnes drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 10-0. Two passed balls scored the final two runs as the game was called with the Maidens winning, 12-0.

On Tuesday, the Maidens traveled to McRae for a key region contest against Telfair County. Charlton took an early lead in the top of the first inning. Javonna Dykes led off with a single and Baxter followed with a double. Woolard helped her own cause with a sacrifice fly and Tillis bunted to score anotherrun for a 2-0 lead.

The Maidens added two more runs in the third inning when Dykes beat out an infield single and advanced to second when the throw got way.  Woolard hit a fly ball to center that was misplayed to score Dykes and Tillis followed with an RBI single to increase the lead to 4-0.

Telfair would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third by scoring twice. It would stay that way until the top of the sixth when the Maidens would add an insurance run.  Tillis led off with a single, moved to second on a passed ball and to third on a wild pitch. Rivera followed with an RBI double for a 5-2 lead.

Woolard would keep the Lady Trojans in check the rest of the way as the Maidens would take the region win.

On Thursday, the Maidens would be on the road again as they faced Atkinson County in another Region 2-A contest. Once again, they would grab the early lead. Dykes led off the game with a single and scored on a double by Baxter. Baxter came home on an error and Charlton led, 2-0, after their first at-bat.

The Lady Rebels scored once in the bottom of the first, but the Maidens would blow the game open in the second inning when eight runners crossed the plate.

Thirteen Maidens came to the plate in theinning. Jalees Murphy, Kylee Varnes, Abby Safford, Brooke Spivey and Javonna Dykes all got hits to start the inning. Two Atkinson errors, and a hit by Rivera, pushed the lead to 8-1. Murphy, Varnes, and Safford all picked up their second hits of the inning to make the score 10-1.

Atkinson scored their second run in the bottom of the third and another in the fi-fth to make it 10- 3.

Charlton would get back on the board in the sixth when Rivera led off with a double and scored when Murphy reached on an error. After a walk to Safford, the Maidens would get RBI hits from Dykes and Baxter making it 14-3 and after the Lady Rebels were retired in the bottom of the sixth the game was  called.
