The Charlton County Maiden and Indian basketball squads remained unbeaten early in the season, after winning games at Echols County on Tuesday, before returning home to knock off McIntosh County Academy on Saturday. Both teams are now 4-0 on the season and will play at home Tuesday, against Atkinson County before going on the road Friday to play Lanier County. On Saturday, they will host Yulee High School out of Florida.
The Maidens opened up play on Tuesday, jumping out to a 34-13 halftime lead against the Lady Wildcats. They would keep the pressure on throughout and come away with an easy 57-31 win. Makaylah Garard led the way with 19 points, while Jordan Vernon was also in double figures with 16 points. Shadiamong Greene finished with eight points, while Heaven Whitlock added seven more points.
A fast start was once again a key to victory in their game against McIntosh on Saturday. The Maidens led 20-9 after the opening quarter and 34-19 at the half. The Lady Buccaneers tried to keep pace and outscored Charlton 22-18 in the second half, but it wouldn't be enough, as the Maidens took home a 52-41 win. Garard and Vernon were both in double figures again with 19 and 11 points, respectively. Elizabeth Carlisle added seven points.
The Indians would have no problem with an over matched Echols squad jumping out to a 38-6 halftime lead and cruising to a 57-20 win. On Saturday, the Tribe would use a suffocating defense and hot three point shooting by Jarvis Wright to pick up the win over McIntosh. Charlton led by ten points after one quarter and increased it to a 43-20 halftime advantage. The two teams played even in the second half with the Indians picking up a 69-46 win. Jarvis Wright scored a career high 32 points, including eight three point baskets made. Curtis Burroughs added 11 points, while Jamari Hamilton and Caleb Howard both scored eight points.
