The Charlton County Maidens softball team saw their highly successful season come to a close last Wednesday at Social Circle. The Maidens battled hard, but in the end it would be the Lady Redskins advancing to the Elite Eight.

The first game started out as a pitcher's duel as the game remained scoreless until the Maidens came up to bat in the top of the fourth inning. Jesslyn Smith and Charli Woolard were hit by pitches. A throwing error on a ball, hit by Kylee Varnes, allowed Smith to score and give Charlton a 1-0 lead.

It would stay that way until the sixth inning, when Social Circle tied the score at 1-1. Then the back and forth began, as the Maidens went back on top in the top of the seventh. Javonna Dykes hit a two out double and scored on an error.

But Social Circle answered back to tie the score in the bottom of the inning at 2-2 as the game went into extra innings. Gabby Tillis led off with a single and Smith reached on an error. Charli Woolard reached on a bunt to load the bases. After a force out at home for the first out Natalie Lynch hit one back to the pitcher, but the throw home was off, allowing Smith to score and give the Maidens a 3-2 advantage.

But in the bottom of the eighth, Social Circle loaded the bases with two outs and with two strikes on the batter, got a game winning walk off single that scored two runs to give the Lady Redskins the win in the opener.

Emma and Charli Woolard led Charlton with two hits each.

In the second game, Social Circle got a solo home run in the top of the first to take the early lead and then added another run in the fourth to go up 2-0.

The Maidens got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Varnes singled home Smith to cut the lead in half a 2-1. They would tie the game in the fifth when Dykes doubled, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly by Emma Woolard.

The tie would be short lived, as the Lady Redskins would score six times in the sixth to go up 8-2. But the Maidens continued to battle in the bottom of the sixth.

Varnes and Abby Safford singled and Sydney Pevey followed with a run scoring single. Dykes added another RBI single before an error allowed another run to score cutting the deficit to 8-5.

But Social Circle put the game away in the top of the seventh scoring six more times to take a 14-5 lead. But the Maidens wouldn't go down without a fight.

Charli Woolard walked and Varnes singled to start the inning. Two outs later, Pevey delivered a triple to score both runners to make the final score 14-7.

Varnes led the way with three hits while Pevey and Dykes both picked up two hits.

Charlton ends the season with a 20-6 record.
