The Charlton County basketball teams each played three competitive games last week, but could never get over the hump and dropped home games vs. Wilcox County and Turner County before falling to Brantley County on the road.
The Maidens opened up the week on Tuesday against Wilcox County and the game was tight throughout with Wilcox holding on to a 35-30 lead heading into the final period. But the Lady Patriots would outscore the Maidens, 17-5, in the final quarter to take a 52-35 win. Shadiamond Green led Charlton with 14 points while Makayla Garard and Taylor Maxwell each scored eight points.
On Friday, the Maidens would host Turner County and fell behind by eight points after one quarter. After an even second quarter left the score at 32-24, the Lady Rebels expanded their lead to as much as 17 points in the second half before a late Charlton rally fell short by a 53-46 score. Jordan Vernon led Charlton with 14 points, while Jalees Murphy was right behind with 12.
The final game of the week pitted the Maidens against Brantley County in Nahunta. Brantley led by five points at the half and outscored Charlton, 28-19, in the second half to claim a 46-32 win. Vernon led the way with eight points, while Garard and Green both scored seven.
The Maidens fall to 5-12 on the season and are 2-6 in region play.
The Indians faced top-ranked Wilcox County on Tuesday and trailed by just four points at the half. The Patriots, however, would outscore the Tribe, 14-6, in the third quarter to open up a 12-point lead. Charlton would try to rally in the fourth quarter, but would end up falling by a 69-59 score. Jaheim Pollock led the Indians with 26 points.
Against Turner County, the Indians would fall behind, 53-39, heading into the final quarter. Again, a late rally was given by the Tribe, but it would fall short as they dropped a 67-58 decision. Seaquan Clark led Charlton with 22 points while Pollock added ten.
The week's finale was against Brantley County and the Herons would come from behind and claim a 47-44 win. No individual statistics were available.
The losses drop the Tribe to 7-10 overall and 4-4 in region play.
The Charlton teams will host Clinch County on Tuesday and Echols County on Friday before hitting the road against Irwin County on Saturday.
