Camden edges Bethune, 24-20, in season opener

The Bethune Middle School Braves take the field.

The Bethune Middle School Braves opened the 2020 football season last Wednesday when they hosted Camden Middle School at Champ Bailey Field. The Braves had a late lead slip away at the end and fell by a 24-20 score.

Elyiss Williams got the Braves off to a good start when he returned the opening kickoff back about 80 yards for a touchdown. Williams caught the two point conversion pass from Ayden Crews to give Bethune an early 8-0 lead.

Late in the first quarter the Cougars would score on a short run, but the PAT kick failed and the Braves lead was cut to 8-6. The score stayed that way as the teams went into the locker rooms at the half.

Camden added two scores in the third quarter to take an 18-8 advantage and things weren't looking good for the Braves. But early in the fourth quarter David Walters hauled in a 49 yard touchdown pass from Jarvis Wright to cut the deficit to 18-14.

The Braves continued to battle and with 3:15 remaining in the game Williams scored his second touchdown on a 49 yard catch from Wright to put Bethune up 20-18.

Down to their last possession the Cougars were backed up in a third and long situation when the Camden runner broke loose for an 85 yard touchdown run with 1:15 left in the game to go ahead 24-20.

With little time remaining the Braves weren't able to mount a rally and dropped the season opener 24-20. The Braves were in Waycross on Tuesday to face Waycross Middle School. They will return home on September 9 to face Berrien Middle School.
