The Bethune Middle School basketball teams kept up their good work last week with wins over Callahan and St. Marys Middle Schools. The Maidens improved to 6-0, while the Braves won their fifth game in a row to improve to 5-1 on the year.

Against Callahan, the Maidens held a slim 11-8 lead at the half. But the Maidens came out hot in the third quarter outscoring the Lady Ramblers, 11-2, and went on to take a 33-20 win. Heaven Whitlock led Bethune with 18 points while Christiona Farmer scored 11. Mahogany Steele wrapped up the scoring with four points.

Against St. Marys, the Maidens jumped out quickly and held a 24-10 halftime advantage. The lead would continue to increase in the second half as the Maidens went on to a 48-25 win. Whitlock again led the way with 24 points while Farmer added 15.

The Braves jumped out to a big lead early on against Callahan and led, 28-9, at the midway point. Callahan couldn’t cut into the deficit too much in the second half and the Braves cruised to a 47-31 win. Jamari Hamilton led the Braves with 18 points, while Demorrion Martin and Jeremy Smith both scored eight.

The game against St. Marys was tight throughout the first half with the Braves holding a slim 26-24 halftime lead. But the Braves got hot in the third quarter and pushed out to a 47-34 lead. St. Marys put on a fourth-quarter rally, but Bethune was able to hold on and win, 58-52. Hamilton led the Braves with 21 points. The Braves also got big games from Jarvis Wright, who scored 17 points, and Martin, who chipped in 11 more.
