The Bethune Middle School basketball teams opened up their season last week with the Maidens winning games, while the Braves split a pair. In “B” team action Bethune was able to win twice against Hilliard.
For the girls against Callahan Middle School, the Maidens cruised out to a 36-4 halftime lead on the way to a 60-5 win. Ten Maidens would score in the game led by Christiona Farmer with 14 points. Rihanna Battle and Trenity Hamilton were also in double figures with 11 and ten points, respectively. Julianna Gowen scored eight points.
In the “A” game against Hilliard, the Maidens would take home a 40-10 win with Farmer scoring 27 points and Makayla Lambert adding 11 points. The “B” game was more of the same, as Bethune would take a 41-12 win. Hamilton led with 21 points, while Battle scored ten points and Gowen added five points.
For the boys team, the Braves jumped out to a 30-10 halftime lead against Callahan and coasted to a 42-16 win. Omari Wilson led the way with 23 points.
The Braves would drop the “A” game against Hilliard, as they were out rebounded and committed too many turnovers in their 51-25 loss. Wilson led the way again with eight points. In the “B” game, the Braves started slow, but still had a 10-4 halftime lead. They would turn it on in the second half and come away with a 31-10 win. Daniel Gibbs and Jaylan Washington led with eight points each, while A.J. Glover and Quincy Wilson led the team in steals and rebounds.
