In a pair of close games last Saturday, the Bethune Maidens split a doubleheader with Fernandina Beach Middle School in Folkston. Fernandina would win the opener before the Maidens rallied back to win the second game.

In the first game the Lady Pirates opened up the scoring with one run in the top of the third inning. But the Maidens roared back scoring four times to take the lead.

Andia Williams doubled with the bases loaded to score Karlee Knowles and Kiara Dickerson. Charli Woolard's RBI ground out scored Abby Crews before Kayleigh Pevey's bunt scored Williams from third to give Bethune a 4-1 advantage.

But Fernandina scored five times in the fourth inning and held the Maidens scoreless to claim the win in game one by a 6-4 score.

Crews, Williams, Dickerson and Abigail Padgett each had one hit for Bethune.

In the second game it looked like Fernandina would sweep the day after scoring five runs in their first two at bats. But the Maidens would answer right back in the bottom of the second and score seven times to take a 7-5 lead.

Knowles would score on an error and Ariana Harden and Abby Crews both stole home to cut the lead to 5-3. Padgett doubled to score Williams and Christiona Farmer followed with an RBI single to tie the score. Padgett stole home and Knowles came up again and doubled home Farmer to give Bethune the 7-5 advantage.

Fernandina tied the game in the top of the third, setting up the Maidens to win the game in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the inning.

Crews drew a one out walk and Williams was hit by a pitch. Woolard followed with a single to score Crews and give Bethune an 8-7 win.

Farmer and Padgett led the Maidens with two hits each while Woolard picked up the win on the mound.

Bethune is scheduled to host Hilliard and Callahan on Tuesday and Thursday of this week.
