The Bethune Middle School Maidens started their basketball season with a bang defeating Yulee Middle School on the road last Thursday, 28-17.

Both teams started out on fire as the Maidens led 17-15 after the opening quarter, but the second quarter proved to be the difference as Bethune stepped up their defense, holding Yulee scoreless to take a 24-15 halftime lead.

Defense was strong by both teams in the third quarter as neither team could put any points on the board, but the Maidens outscored Yulee, 4-2, in the final period to take home the win to begin the season.

Heaven Whitlock led Bethune with 11 points, while Christiona Farmer was right behind, scoring nine. Also getting in on the scoring were Sharmiracle Mincey with six points and April Key with two.

No information was available for the boys’ game. Both teams will be back in action after the Thanksgiving holidays on Wednesday, December 4 when Yulee makes the return trip back to Folkston.
