The Bethune Middle School Maidens softball team saw their record fall to 5-6 on the season after dropping a tight one-run game last Monday against Yulee Middle School.

Yulee scored twice right out of the gate to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Bethune would come right back in the bottom of the first and cut the lead in half.

Kylee Varnes led off with a single and moved over to third on a passed ball and a wild pitch. She would score on an RBI groundout by Abby Crews to make the score 2-1.

It would remain that way until the bottom of the fourth when Addison Crews reached second on an error and came home on a single by Andia Williams to tie the score at 2-2.

But in the top of the fifth, Yulee was able to push across a run to regain the lead. Bethune was able to get a runner to third in each of the final three innings but couldn’t come up with a key hit to score again as they fell by the 3-2 score.

Varnes led the Bethune offense with two hits while Charli Woolard pitched well enough to win allowing just one earned run over seven innings while striking out seven batters.
