The Bethune Middle School Maidens fell to 5-7 on the year after dropping a close game last week against Yulee.

The Maidens scored once in the top of the first when Kylee Varnes led off with a triple and came home on an RBI groundout by Charli Woolard.

But Yulee responded with six runs in the bottom half to take the lead.

Yulee added two more runs in the third inning before Bethune started to rally in the fourth.

A bases-loaded double by Varnes plated three runners to highlight the inning, while Woolard and Addison Crews also added RBI singles as Bethune tied the score at 8-8

Yulee would retake the lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring once, to go ahead 9-8.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth when Yulee added two more runs for an 11-8 lead.

Down to their last at-bat, the Maidens would score on an error, but couldn’t finish the comeback and fell by an 11-9 score.

Varnes’ two hits and three RBI’s led the Maidens, but too many errors proved to be the undoing for Bethune.
