The Bethune Maidens and Braves both picked up wins last week over Yulee and Hilliard Middle Schools. The Maidens are now 3-0 on the season while the Braves improved to 2-1.

Against Yulee, the Maidens held a 17-13 halftime advantage and used a crucial third quarter in which they outscored the Hornets, 6-0, to pull out to a 10-point lead. Yulee would rally in the fourth quarter, but in the end, the Maidens would hold on to a 25-21 win. Heaven Whitlock led Bethune with 15 points, while Christiona Farmer added 10 points.

Defense was the key in the Maidens game against Hilliard as they jumped out to a 23-4 halftime lead. Both teams went cold from the field in the second half, but Bethune came out on top, 25-7. Whitlock and Farmer again led the way with ten and nine points, respectively.

In boys action, the Braves turned a three-point lead after one quarter into a 26-8 halftime lead to pull away from the team that had defeated them prior to Thanksgiving. The lead would continue to grow as the Braves took home a 50-29 win. Jamari Hamilton led the way with 29 points, while Jeremy Smith added 12 points.

Against Hilliard, the Braves led throughout, but the score was never comfortable until the end. Leading by six at the half, the Braves increased the lead to 35-23 before Hilliard rallied in the fourth quarter to narrow the lead. But the Braves withstood the run by the Flashes to take home a 44-33 win. Smith led a balanced scoring attack with 12 points while Hamilton and Elias Williams each scored 11 points. Jarvis Wright added eight points.

Both teams will play at home on Thursday against Fernandina Beach.
