Spencer Lamar Young, “Grumpy”, 84, of Hilliard, FL passed away Wednesday, January 29 in Jacksonville. He was born August 1, 1935 in Waycross to the late Willie Leon Young and Lonnie Roxie Waters Young. He was a Land and Construction Surveyor until his retirement. He was a member of Buford Grove Baptist Church in Hilliard. He was a loving father and family man. Mr. Young was the #1 surveyor in the state of Florida for 40 years, leading many younger generations to the trade of construction surveying. After retirement, he found Christ at the age of 80 and became a servant to the Lord and found another calling handing out food at the food bank serving hundreds weekly. He enjoyed farming and was born with a green thumb and was always willing to share his bountiful harvest with anyone.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Martha Jean Corbitt Young; three children, Brenda Kay Nelson, Spencer Newsome “JR” (Michelle) Young and Marsha Gail (Roland) Cabanas; four grandchildren, Sabrina Ann McIntosh, Katlyne Renee Moore, Michael Thomas Young and Wesley Spencer Lee Young; six brothers and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 6 at 4:00 p.m. at Buford Grove Baptist Church, Hilliard, with Pastors Curtis Harrington and Mike Pruitt officiating. The family will receive friends at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, February 6 at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
