Local father murdered, arrest made in case

On Sunday, June 28, 2020, at approximately 1:50 a.m., the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Region 14 Kingsland Office was requested by the Charlton County Sheriff’s Office to conduct an investigation into the death of Alexander Gerald Ham, 30, of Folkston. As a result of this investigation, Travis Milton Hamlette, 40, of Atlanta, has been arrested for aggravated assault and murder in connection with Ham’s death.

Earlier on this same date, the Charlton County Sheriff’s Office had responded to a 911 call in reference to a shooting that had occurred on Mt. Carmel St. in Folkston. When deputies arrived, they found Alexander Gerald Ham deceased from an apparent gunshot wound.

“Anyone that knew Gerard knew he not only loved his daughter unconditionally, but loved and raised two kids like his own. He was a great man and father and will never be replaced,” said girlfriend Shanna Kidd.

Ham leaves behind his mother April Williams, twin sister, Alexandria Ham, brother Carlos Smiley, girlfriend Shanna Kidd, daughters Chassity, Kyla and Karleigh; aunts, uncles, cousins and many, many friends who have shared of his friendliness and kind spirit.
