The City of Swainsboro recognized Dean Gowen, son of Jimmie and Ann Gowen of Folkston, Monday night, February 4, for his heroism in rescuing William Middlebrooks from an airplane crash. Gowen was on a nearby golf course when he saw the plane crash at Swainsboro airport. He pulled a golf cart up against the fence, climbed on top of it and crawled over the barbed wire to rush to the crashed plane. Gowen pulled Middlebrooks and another victim from the wreckage before the fire became too intense. Middlebrooks was the only survivor. Four people died from the crash. Even today, Gowen downplays his role and says he did what anyone else would have done.
