The Folkston City Council held its last meeting of 2019 Monday, December 16, 2019. Councilman Pardner Davis was absent.
During the meeting, the council heard from Folkston Police Chief Wesley Green. Chief Green stared the police department filed 35 incident reports, investigated seven accidents and answered 1,043 calls during the month of October 2019. The police department collected $8,574.00; the city’s portion is $5,101.03 of the fines and forfeitures collected.
Also during the meeting, City Manager Pender Lloyd updated the city council members on the water line extension. He stated the city has completed phase one of the extension on Reynolds Road and customers are now being connected. He also alerted the council of a pump at the lift station located on Hwy. 301 had to be replaced and a motor in the well house at city hall is also being repaired.
The 2020 Census is now underway and the city has been asked to find two representatives for Folkston to serve on the US Census Committee. Mayor Lee Gowen stated Betty Howard and Destiny Thompson have volunteered their services.
Mayor Gowen gave the first reading for the updated water and sewer ordinance to include the rate structure and all amendments. The ordinance will be read again and offically adopted Monday, January 13 during the regualr monthly meeting.
Folkston recently received the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with D. Ray James Correctional Facility. Mayor Gowen stated the city is required to renew the MOU each year. There were no changes made in the 2020 agreement. The motion was made and passed unanimously.
The city has also received an application for a liquor license from Thai Smile restaurant, located on Main Street. Mayor Gowen stated the application will need to set on the table for 30 days before it can be approved.
An account for the Sewer Fund was set up at FNB South for the city. The account is a requirement by USDA for the sewer improvement loan. Mayor Gowen recommended the council approve the Sewer Fund checking account. The motion was made and passed unanimously.
