Earthmover stolen from Chesser Island Landfill

According to Charlton County Sheriff Robert Phillips, Jonathan Wayne Longmire, of Monroe, GA, an employee of Cooper, Barnett and Page, a subcontractor working at Chesser Island Landfill, allegedly stole an earthmover tractor Saturday, May 15 and began to make his way to Folkston. The landfill closed at noon and no Waste Management employees were on site. Numerous calls came in about erratic driving and shortly thereafter, a manager from the landfill reported the earthmover stolen by the disgruntled employee.

Officers from the Office of the Sheriff and Folkston Police Department set up in front of Folkston Elementary School in order to attempt to stop the giant earthmover. With a little persuasion from Chief Deputy Bill Lee, Officer Clint Rhoden and Sheriff Phillips the suspect stopped the machine and surrendered. No one was injured in the incident. Several other Deputies and Police Officers responded and got into position to take action had the suspect not stopped.

Longmire was charged with Theft by Taking and Reckless Driving and was later released on bond.

“Large vehicles like this one create extremely serious conditions! Failing to stop by the driver could have resulted in serious repercussions,” stated Sheriff Phillips. “Thank God the young man surrendered peacefully!”
