CCHS STAR Student and STAR Teacher named

Charlton County High School Senior Samantha Baxter was named the STAR Student for the Class of 2020. Baxter selected science teacher, Tracey Willis, to be her STAR Teacher.

The STAR program stands for the Student Teacher Achievement Recognition. The program was founded in 1958 by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and has been sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) since the mid-1990’s. Locally, the STAR Student and Teacher are sponsored by the Charlton County STAR Student Alumni Association. To be selected for the honor, the student has to have the highest SAT score in his or her graduating class and be a member of the Top 10% academically. Rigorous minimum score requirements must also be met. The STAR Teacher is selected by the student and is a teacher identified by the student as being one who has made a significant contribution to the student’s scholastic development. As a local winner, Baxter will move on to the Regional STAR competition for a chance to compete for the state STAR honor.

Baxter is a the Senior Class President, Miss Shilofohaw, a member of Honor Court, Top five percent all four years of high school, Varsity Softball, Golf, Beta Club, and the Georgia Secretary of State Ambassadors

Baxter stated, “Since the start of high school, Ms. Willis has been an integral part of my time here at Charlton County High School. Under her leadership in programs such as the Georgia Secretary of State Ambassadors and a Class of 2020 sponsor, I have witnessed first-hand her dedication and commitment to her responsibilities. She never hesitates to take on anything her students ask of her – spending much of her free time and resources to make opportunities and programs possible for us. After also being under her instruction in the classroom, it has shown me the heart she has for not only teaching but also for her students.”

“I am so grateful to get the opportunity to thank Ms. Willis for always being willing to help, never questioning why we still haven’t decorated the day of homecoming, and for helping us plan a prom in two weeks. You are truly a star teacher! Chomp on!”
