The Charlton County Board of Education met in a regular meeting on April 20 in the boardroom. 

Superintendent Dr. Brent Tilley stated the Fiscal year is 66.66 percent complete. So far, 21.7 percent of budget revenues have been collected. A total of 53 percent of state revenues have been collected while 44.35 percent of the total revenues have been collected. Of total expenses, 53.61 percent of budgeted expenses has been spent.

Dr. Tilley informed the board members of the seventh month attendance, which shows 94 percent attendance.

A request was received by the Charlton County Office of the Sheriff for the use of Charlton County High School for the Junior Sheriff’s Academy to be held June 7-11 and for the AAU Wrestling Tournament for the use of the Bethune Middle School gym on April 24, 2021. Both requests were unanimously approved.

Requests for overnight field trips for the CCHS softball tournament, held April 14-15 in Dublin, the FFA state poultry judging and convention, held April 23-24 in Macon, the CCHS literary team for April 23-24 in Milledgeville, and the CCHS girls’ basketball tournament to be held June 14-15 in Pembroke were approved.

Dr. Tilley made the recommendation to approve the Baker County Schools 2021-2022 attendance agreement, which is done every year for students in the southern part of the county. The motion was made and passed unanimously.

The board approved the purchase of two buses from Rush Truck Centers for a total of $195,000.00, as well as a bus engine overhaul also through Rush Truck Center service for bus 37 for $34,899.92.

Dr. Tilley presented the board with policy GBIA-Teacher Evaluation Appeals for a first reading. The policy will lay on the table for 30 days for review. Dr. Tilley also presented the board with policy JGCD-Medication for a first reading, which will also lay on the table for 30 days for review. The board approved the first reading for both policies.

The board entered into executive session to discuss the hiring of personnel, periodic evaluation of personnel and potential litigation. No action was taken.

The list of FY 22 certified employees was unanimously approved, with the exception of Mrs. Pamela Nixon, Mrs. Andrea Canaday and Mr. Brian Lloyd.

Andrea Canaday was approved as a FY 22 certified employee, with Board member John Canaday abstaining.

Dr. Tilley made the recommendation to approve the FY 22 certified employee Brian Lloyd, which was approved unanimously, with Board member Pender Lloyd abstaining.

A motion was made to approve FY 22 certified employee Pamela Nixon and was passed with board member Curtis Nixon abstaining.

Dr. Tilley made the recommendation to approve the hiring of Jack Corder, Kimberly Graham and Nicholas Schrock as Bethune Middle School teachers. The motion was unanimously approved. The transfers of Melissa Allen-BMS, Meagan Lee-CCHS, Rachael McCullough-SGES and Heather Rigdon to the position of Instructional coach for the 2021-2022 school year, were unanimously approved. The hiring of Joshua Graham, Charles Giddens and Vonda Wiggs for the position of substitute bus drivers were approved.

The following resignations were also approved: Haley Morgan-BMS teacher and Mr. Brad Westerbeck-CCHS athletic trainer – effective May 27, 2021.

Dr. Tilley made the recommendation to approve the retirement of Mrs. Mary Cobb and Mrs. Ethel Hannans from their positions as bus drivers.

The transfer of Kelli Chesser from FES first grade to St. George Elementary School second grade were approved, effective August 2, 2021.

A leave of absence was approved for Sanaa Wise leave from February 12, 2021, until August 2, 2021 and was unanimously approved.

Dr. Tilley informed the board member of the need to change the June meeting from June 8 to June 22 at 7:00 p.m. The next meeting will be held Tuesday, May 18 at 7:00 p.m.
