House Bill 1289 was on track to go before the House Natural Resources and Environment Committee, but the bill was deemed premature as the agency is still reviewing Twin Pines Mineral’s application to mine titanium and zirconium near the Okefenokee Swamp.
The bill was first proposed on February 8 - the same day Gov. Brian Kemp declared a National Okefenokee Swamp Day - by both Democrats and Republicans.
The bipartisan bill could potentially ban surface mining operations along Trail Ridge, located between the St. Marys and Satilla River. If passed, it would prohibit the director of the Environmental Protection Division of the Natural Resources Department from issuing, modifying or renewing any permit to conduct surface mining within that area. However, it would not prevent what Twin Pines Minerals has already proposed, it would only affect future amendments to the company’s mining operations.
The hearing has yet to be rescheduled, and it is not expected to be any time this year.
